KINKAY/English/Áo dài photoshoot

Áo dài photoshoot — makeup and hair

You have booked the áo dài and the photographer. The face is the part most people leave to whoever the rental shop has on hand that morning, and it is the part you will actually be looking at in ten years.

What this is

One price, one look, no negotiating

A lighter package than a full event booking, built specifically for áo dài sessions: one look, sixty to ninety minutes, at Kay's studio or a location in the central districts. Priced so it sits alongside the shoot rather than doubling its cost.

ServicePrice

Worth knowing

Things nobody tells you before an áo dài shoot

It starts before sunrise

The good locations — the Central Post Office, Bến Thành, the old colonial streets, the university — are empty and beautifully lit for about an hour after sunrise, and crowded and harsh after that. A six o'clock shoot means makeup at four thirty. Plan the night before accordingly.

Saigon humidity is the real enemy

You will be outdoors, moving, in a fitted high-collared garment, in heat. The base has to be set for that from the start — this is not the same application as an air-conditioned dinner, and it is the single most common reason rental-shop makeup slides off by the second location.

The áo dài decides the hair

The collar sits high and the silhouette is long and narrow. Hair worn down fights it in almost every frame. Send Kay a photo of the áo dài when you book and the hair is planned around it rather than improvised on the morning.

Book the makeup before the photographer

Photographers in this city have more availability than good makeup artists do at sunrise. If you have a fixed date, lock the face first.

Who does this

Visitors, and people who live here

Visiting Vietnam

A few days in Saigon and one morning set aside for photographs you will actually print. Kay can work around a tight itinerary.

Living here

The portraits you have been meaning to take for three years. Tết, an anniversary, or the end of a posting before you leave the country.

Families

Three generations in matching áo dài is one of the best photographs a family can own. Makeup for everyone, styled to sit together in one frame.

Graduation and milestones

Áo dài graduation sets are a Vietnamese tradition worth borrowing. One look, one morning, done properly.
